It is our aim to encourage students to love cooking and have an active interest in understanding the impact food has on their body.

The department benefits from state-of-the-art facilities for the teaching of food, including two well-equipped food rooms, with extensive equipment and resources that are available to students from year 7 to 11. The department also has two theory rooms which are particularly useful for creating a suitable working environment for the theoretical elements of the course.

What do our children study?

Key Stage 3

Throughout Key Stage 3, students develop an understanding of the nutritional requirements of a healthy diet through mainly practical sessions. These practical sessions will include completing experiments to determine the function of particular ingredients. Students learn to develop food preparation techniques, progressing their skills each year. Embedded within the course is the opportunity to give students information about sensible choices for healthy living. Students will also look at the prevention of food poisoning and the correct storage and preparation of food alongside food hygiene and safety within the kitchen.

Key Stage 4

GCSE - Food Preparation and Nutrition

At GCSE the OCR Food Preparation and Nutrition course is designed to investigate the relationship between nutrition, diet, food choice and health.

It develops students’ ability to make informed choices regarding a healthy diet and effective nutrition for a healthy lifestyle. Throughout the course, students will complete a variety of food investigations that link with the properties and function of specific ingredients. It also provides them with the skills of an informed consumer when choosing goods and services.
