Personal Development and Wellbeing

At Herne Bay High School, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to flourish academically, socially and personally, regardless of their background or starting point. Our Personal Development and Wellbeing programme is at the heart of this commitment, ensuring that every young person leaves our school equipped not only with academic qualifications but also with the knowledge, skills, values and character needed to lead happy, healthy and successful lives. We want students to:

  • Belong - Students feel safe, included and valued within a school community built upon kindness and respect. They develop a sense of identity and belonging while learning to appreciate the experiences, values and beliefs of others.
  • Flourish - Students develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally. They become increasingly reflective, resilient, compassionate and confident, with the skills needed to form healthy relationships and make responsible choices.
  • Succeed - Students leave Herne Bay High School prepared to participate positively in modern Britain. They understand their rights and responsibilities, value democracy and equality, respect the law and have the confidence to contribute to their communities and wider society.

Our vision is to develop confident, resilient, respectful and aspirational young people who are well prepared for life in modern Britain and able to make positive contributions to their communities and wider society. Through a carefully planned programme of Personal Development and Wellbeing, we seek to broaden horizons, raise aspirations and provide experiences that many students may not otherwise access.

Our Personal Development programme includes:

  • PSHE
  • RSHE
  • Careers guidance
  • Enrichment opportunities
  • Student leadership opportunities
  • British Values
  • SMSC
  • Wellbeing
  • Safeguarding
  • Character development

Together, these elements provide students with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to make informed decisions, build healthy relationships, respect diversity, stay safe, maintain positive physical and mental health, and navigate an increasingly complex world.

Everything we do is underpinned by our core values of Kindness, Respect and Dedication. These values shape our curriculum, our relationships and our expectations of one another. We believe that kindness builds compassionate communities, respect enables every individual to feel valued and heard, and dedication inspires perseverance, ambition and a commitment to excellence.

We believe Personal Development and Wellbeing is most effective when it is proactive, inclusive and responsive. Our programme is therefore continually informed by student voice, safeguarding intelligence, attendance and behaviour trends, local and national issues, and the evolving needs of our community. This enables us to deliver a curriculum that is relevant, meaningful and preventative, equipping students with the skills to overcome challenges and embrace opportunities throughout their lives.

Our ambition is that every student leaves Herne Bay High School:

  • embodying our values of Kindness, Respect and Dedication
  • equipped with the knowledge/skills/confidence to make informed/responsible decisions
  • resilient and able to maintain positive physical and mental wellbeing
  • respectful and appreciative of diversity, equality and different perspectives
  • ambitious for their future, understanding the opportunities available to them
  • active, responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities
  • prepared for successful transitions into further education, employment and adult life
